We take St. Patrick’s Day seriously here in Savannah, and it’s lucky for you that we do! Because that means we’re always dreaming up creations to serve on March 17th, like a magically delicious and deliciously easy St. Patrick’s Day Puppy Chow recipe. It’s half classic puppy chow, half green puppy chow, and all festive! Ready to make your own? Great! Let’s get started.

You’ll need the following tools:

  • 1 gallon-sized ziptop storage bag
  • 2 large heatproof bowls
  • 2 rubber spatulas
  • 2 parchment-lined baking sheets

You’ll need the following ingredients:

  • 1 box Crispix cereal, standard size, divided
  • 1 bag semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 bag white chocolate chips
  • 1 cup peanut butter, divided
  • 2 sticks butter, divided
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract, divided
  • green food coloring
  • 1 box 4x confectioner’s sugar
  • your favorite green mix-ins (we used green M&Ms, Lucky Charms shamrock marshmallows, and St. Patrick’s Day sprinkles)

First, we’ll start with the classic half. Start by melting the semi-sweet chocolate, half of the peanut butter, and 1 stick of butter together in the microwave in a heatproof bowl in 30-second increments, stirring after each, until fully melted—be careful not to burn the chocolate! Then, stir in a teaspoon of vanilla. Gently (but quickly!) fold half of the cereal into the chocolate mixture until it’s fully coated.

In the ziptop bag, dump in the confectioner’s sugar and the still-warm chocolate-coated cereal, and shake until the cereal is evenly coated in the sugar. Spread the sugar-dusted chocolate out on one of the baking sheets to dry.

Next, let’s tackle the green half of the puppy chow. In a separate heatproof bowl, follow the same heating instructions as above with the white chocolate, the remaining ½ cup of peanut butter, and final stick of butter. Once it’s melted, stir in the rest of the vanilla and enough green food coloring to turn the mixture bright green. Again, use your rubber spatula to gently and quickly fold the remaining cereal into the green chocolate mixture, and spread it on a baking sheet to dry.

After about 15 minutes or once the two sets are cool and dry, you can combine both the semi-sweet and the green chocolate cereals into a large mixing bowl.

Lastly, you’ll add your mix-ins. We picked the shamrock marshmallows out of a certain leprechaun-approved cereal and ordered green M&M’s and fun St. Patrick’s Day sprinkles offline, but your options are only limited by your imagination!

We hope you have a blast making (and eating) this St. Patrick’s Day snack recipe! Be sure to let us know what mix-ins you plan to add in the comments below.

St. Patrick’s Day is a very, very big deal here in Savannah. We’re home to the second largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the country, second only to the one in New York City, so as our streets fill with as many as half a million tourists, we’re always looking for ways to help make the day go a little smoother. And one of those ways involves easy-to-carry and easy-to-eat St. Patrick’s Day food recipes.

Today we’re sharing a twist on one of our favorite traditional Irish recipes—Miniature Shepherd’s Pies! They’re the perfect thing to keep your belly full, which any St. Paddy’s Day reveler will tell you is crucial, because they work as appetizers or as an on-the-go entrée! This recipe is courtesy of Cooking with Paula Deen magazine, where you can always find easy and delicious recipes for holidays and beyond. Click here for a limited-time deal on an annual subscription, and then, let’s get to cooking!

You’ll need the following ingredients to get started:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ½ cup chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ cup frozen peas and carrots, thawed
  • ⅓ cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ (24-ounce) package frozen cut russet potatoes (we used Ore-Ida Steam n’ Mash Cut Russet Potatoes)
  • ½ (5.2-ounce) package garlic and herbs cheese (we used Boursin Cheese Spread)
  • 1 (10.5-ounce) can refrigerated original buttermilk biscuits
  • ½ cup crushed potato chips
  • Garnish: chopped fresh chives

First up, you’ll want to preheat the oven to 375˚F and spray 10 muffin cups with cooking spray.

Then, in a large skillet, brown the ground beef with the onions and garlic over medium heat until the meat is crumbly and mostly cooked through. Drain it, then mix in the peas, carrots, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, salt, and pepper, then remove the pan from the heat.

Next up, cook the potatoes according to the package directions, then stir in the cheese until well combined.

Now you’ll want to press the biscuit dough into the bottom of the prepared muffin tins, pushing them up the sides so they make individual biscuit bowls. Top each bowl with the meat mixture, gently pressing down, and top each one with the cheesy mashed potatoes.

Bake approximately 20 minutes, or until the biscuits are a pretty golden-brown color. Sprinkle each individual shepherd’s pie with the potato chip crumbles and chopped fresh chives.

These are absolutely perfect as a St. Patrick’s Day appetizer recipe or eat-on-the-go entrees for lunch or dinner—especially if you happen to find yourself exploring downtown Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities!

Since we love St. Patrick’s Day here in Savannah, we thought we’d share how to make a festive green grits pie that’s sure to add a sweet note to one of Savannah’s favorite holidays! It’s the perfect Southern dessert recipe with a fun Irish-inspired twist.

Grits are incredibly versatile and can be served sweet or savory—today, we’ve opted for a sweet version that will make this Southern pie recipe into the perfect St. Patrick’s Day dessert recipe.

You’ll need the following ingredients to get started:

  • ⅛ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup quick cooking grits, not instant
  • ½ cup butter
  • green food coloring
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • ¼ cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup whipping cream,
  • 1 tablespoon confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 (9-inch) refrigerated (or frozen and thawed) pie crust, unbaked
  • strawberries, for garnish

Got everything gathered? Great! Now, let’s preheat your oven to 325˚F.

Then, in a small saucepan, bring the salt and ¾ cup water to a boil before adding your grits and reducing the heat. Then, be sure to cover your pan and let the grits cook on low for about 5 minutes or until the grits are really thick—you’ll want to stir several times while the grits cook.

Once thick, add butter and a drop of green food coloring, stirring until the butter is melted and the color is mixed in. Then, set aside your green grits to cool slightly.

Then mix together the granulated sugar, flour, eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla before adding the mixture to the cooled grits, ensuring it’s well combined. Now, simply pour your green grits filling into the refrigerated pie crust, and bake it for about 35 to 40 minutes, or until it’s set.

While it bakes, you’ll want to whip the whipping cream and confectioners’ sugar together with a drop of green food coloring until you have a sweet whipped topping for your pie. Top your pie with the whipped topping and garnish with strawberries for a festive Southern St. Patrick’s Day dessert recipe. And don’t worry—you can serve this pie warm or cold!

Will you be trying this unique St. Patrick’s Day dessert recipe? If not, what would you make instead? Let us know in the comments below.

If you’re planning a festive meal for St. Paddy’s Day, you’ve got to include a St. Patrick’s Day potato recipe or two!

Why, you ask? Well, potatoes are traditionally a significant part of Irish cuisine—not because potatoes are native to that region (in fact, they’re actually native to the Andes Mountains in South America). The reason the correlation between Ireland and the potato is so strong is because during the Great Irish Famine (1845-1852), potatoes became a staple of Irish diets because they are hearty, calorie-dense, and were easy to grow in the Irish soil. At one point, nearly half of the Irish population subsisted almost completely on potatoes, while the rest of the population still ate them quite often.

So in honor of the rich history and cultural significance of the potato in Ireland, we’re sharing great St. Patrick’s Day potato recipes to pair with your corned beef and cabbage. Which of these will you be trying? Let us know in the comments below.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, y’all!

Corned Beef & Cabbage is a classic St. Patrick’s Day dish, and this recipe, which features a Southern twist, is an easy one to make. That should free up your time and brainpower for enjoying the rest of your festivities.

Does easy, delicious, and festive sound like a winning combination for you? Then, let’s not wait any longer! Here are the ingredients you’ll need to get started:

  • 1 4-pound corned beef brisket
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon bottled hot pepper sauce
  • 4 slices bacon
  • 1 head green cabbage
  • 4 (1 ½-pounds) potatoes
  • Mustard, for serving

Now, let’s get cooking!

Rinse the corned beef under cold running water and then place it in a large pot or Dutch oven. Add the garlic, bay leaves, hot sauce, and enough water to cover the brisket. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat, cover, and simmer about 4 hours or until the beef is tender.

Meanwhile, in a large skillet, cook the bacon over medium heat until crisp. Transfer the bacon to a paper towel-lined plate to drain the bacon, retaining the fat in the skillet. Add the cabbage wedges and potatoes in batches; cook over medium-high heat until brown but not tender.

When the beef is very tender, transfer it to a warm serving platter and cover it with aluminum foil, retaining the cooking liquid. Add the potatoes to the simmering liquid, and cover and simmer them for about 15 minutes or until they begin to soften. Add the cabbage, letting it simmer for about 15 minutes more or until potatoes are easily pierced with a fork. Next, discard the bay leaves.

Using tongs or a slotted spoon, transfer the vegetables to the serving platter and crumble the bacon over it all. Now, you can serve it up with some delicious mustard.

Your friends and family are sure to love it so much, they won’t be sure whether they should kiss the cook or kiss the Irish!

Top o’ the mornin’ to ya! On St. Patrick’s Day, no matter our heritage, we’re all Irish! Here in Savannah, it’s an all-day all-weekend event. The day of the parade starts early, so we need to make sure our bellies are full to give us the energy to make it through the day. If you’re looking for a breakfast that will have a lovely Irish twist, this is the perfect one for you!

Irish Soda Bread and Eggs are perfect for eating at home before heading to the parade, but they are also great to make on the route while you’re saving your spot if you can find electricity for your Paula Deen Air Oven!

Irish Soda Bread and Eggs

Ingredients

  • 4 slices Irish soda bread, cut 1-inch thick
  • ½ lb bacon, cooked crisp and crumbled (drippings reserved)
  • ½ yellow onion, chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • ¼ cup Asiago cheese, grated
  • ¼ cup cheddar cheese grated
  • 4 large eggs
  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon Herbs de Provence

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 350 °F. Prepare a baking sheet by covering it with foil and spraying with a non-stick cooking spray.
  • Using a biscuit or cookie cutter, take out the center of each bread slice, making a circle. Place the bread on your prepared pan and brush the melted butter generously over the slices.
  • In a medium sauté pan, sauté the chopped onion in the reserved bacon drippings. Add a pinch of salt and pepper. Once the onion is translucent and a little brown around the edges, remove from the heat.
  • Add the crumbled bacon and tomatoes to the onions and stir until just mixed. Set aside.
  • Crack an egg and drop it in the center of each piece of bread. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and Herbs de Provence.
  • Place in the oven and cook just until the egg whites are done. Remove the pan from the oven and top the eggs & bread with the grated cheeses, dividing evenly among all four bread/egg slices.
  • Put oven on broil and return the slices to oven. Once cheese is bubbly remove from oven.
  • To serve, divide the onion mixture evenly and spoon it over each slice. Serve hot.

For the Irish Soda Bread & Eggs, you can always buy store-bought, but we love a good homemade bread. So, naturally, we have to share our homemade Irish Soda Bread recipe with you!

Irish Soda Bread

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • ⅓ cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 tablespoon caraway seeds
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tablespoon heavy cream

Directions

  • Heat the oven to 400 °F. Arrange oven rack to the middle row, and line a sheet tray with parchment paper.
  • Add the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt to a large bowl and whisk to combine. Add the butter and cut it in using a pastry cutter until it looks like small peas.
  • Add the buttermilk, raisins and caraway seeds, and stir until it looks like a shaggy biscuit dough. Turn the dough out on your cutting board and knead for 20 seconds until it comes together.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and heavy cream. Divide the dough into two pieces. Form each into a round ball on the prepared sheet tray, tucking in the seams beneath the dough. Brush each round with the egg wash, then score an “x” on the top of the round using a sharp knife.
  • Bake for 30 minutes, until golden browned and a wooden skewer inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean. Let cool on a wire rack.

If St. Patrick’s Day has you feeling a little thirsty too, rest assured—we’ve got you covered! This Homemade Irish Crème Liqueur is just the thing to ease into your day of festivities. Whether you drink it alone or just as a splash in your morning coffee, it will definitely put a smile on your face

Homemade Irish Crème Liqueur:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Irish whiskey
  • 4 oz sweetened condensed milk
  • ½ pint whipping cream
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup
  • 2 teaspoons instant coffee
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract

Directions

  • Combine all ingredients in the pitcher of a blender. Blend until smooth. Now it’s time to serve it!
  • To store, place in a clean tightly covered container and store for up to a month in the refrigerator.

Forget about kissing the Irish; this meal is slap-yo-mama good. Slainte, y’all! (That means “cheers!”)

When people think of Savannah, they often think of sweet tea and Southern charm. They don’t typically think of the luck of the Irish. But did you know that Savannah is home to one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day parades in the country? It’s second only to New York City’s parade! Not too shabby for a small Georgia city.

If you want to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in Savannah, try coming a week early next year—that’s when the festivities start! The Greening of the Fountains is one of our favorite events. All the fountains in Savannah’s iconic squares, and maybe the most notable tourist attraction in Savannah—the Forsyth Fountain—have green water flowing through them.

You can also attend special events, like the Celtic Cross Mass & Reception, Tybee Island Parade, Irish Heritage Dance, and Tara Feis, which is a family-friendly festival with live performances by Irish dancers and musicians, arts and crafts, Irish food, and games for all ages.

Of course, the culmination of it all is the parade. Held rain or shine, Savannah’s residents and tourists, alike, take their celebrations very seriously! Many set up in squares before the sun even rises to ensure they have the very best spot along the parade route, but it’s worth it! The parade can last for hours with marching bands, bagpipes, dancers, members of the armed forces, parade committee members, schools, and many more. Whether or not you have Irish heritage, join us here in Savannah for one of the greatest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations around.

If you’re planning ahead and want to book a place to stay for next year’s celebration, stay at Paula’s! Paula Deen’s Y’all Come Inn on Tybee Island is the perfect home away from home. Plus, The Lady & Sons is open on St. Patrick’s Day, so you can make a reservation and skip packing lunch in a cooler.

St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner—a day full of parades, celebration, Irish heritage, and all things green.

This year, we decided to spruce up our St. Patty’s Day menu. Using the traditional ingredients and Paula’s recipes, we came up with a fantastic menu that is a twist on the traditional. Your guests will be sure to love it!

The meat is the focal point of this delicious meal. Traditionally it’s corned beef, a cured and salted cut of beef that is braised over a long period of time, but this year we decided to substitute this dish with Marilyn’s Slow Cooker Pot Roast. Braised for hours in a slow cooker, this pot roast is delicious, tender, and juicy.

And, now for the sides: No St. Patrick’s Day dinner is complete without cabbage. Paula’s Country Style Fried Cabbage is the perfect substitution for the blander boiled variety we are used to. Cooking the cabbage in bacon fat takes the flavor to a whole new level!

We all know the Irish love their potatoes, but who wants plain old boiled potatoes when you can have Buttery Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes? This dish is irresistibly creamy with an added richness from the buttermilk.

To add a little color to your plate, we thought we would mix in a bright veggie. Paula’s Honey Lemon Carrots are sweet, tangy, and the perfect pairing to the rest of your meal.

You’ll definitely need something to sop up all the yumminess from your plate. Skip the Irish Soda Bread this year, and make a batch of Paula’s Garlic Cheese Biscuits. Flaky and cheesy, biscuits don’t get any better than this!

So now that you have the basic meal down, it’s time for dessert. You know Paula—she loves her grits. She loves them so much she even puts them in dessert. Her Green Grits Pie is the absolute perfect dessert for St. Patrick’s Day. Sweet, creamy, and bright green, it’s an absolute must-have for your party! Really impress everyone, and make a batch of Homemade Irish Creme Liqueur to wash it all down with.

This St. Patrick’s Day, have fun, celebrate to your hearts content, and fill your belly with Paula’s not-so-traditional feast!
